There is something about the beach at sunset that never gets old.
Every evening is different. Sometimes the sky glows in soft pastel colors, sometimes it disappears behind a layer of marine clouds, and every so often it surprises us with a sky that looks almost painted. This was one of those evenings.
We met just south of the Santa Monica Pier for a short maternity session to celebrate a growing family and announce the exciting news that their little one is on the way. The beach was alive with summer energy. Families wandered along the shoreline, the tide was low enough to leave a beautiful stretch of wet sand reflecting the sky, and every now and then we could hear cheers from the World Cup watch party on the pier.
Like many expecting parents, this sweet couple had booked one of my shorter sessions. Thirty minutes can be all you need when the light is beautiful and everyone is ready to simply enjoy being together.
Mother Nature, however, keeps her own schedule.
Sunsets don't wait, and neither does the light. Every minute makes a difference, especially during golden hour when the colors shift so quickly. Even with a slightly later start than planned, we embraced the time we had together and focused on what mattered most, their connection, their excitement, and the tiny ultrasound photos that already carried so much meaning.
As the sun dipped lower, the sky transformed into layers of lavender, pink, and deep purple, with dramatic clouds stretching across the horizon. It became the perfect backdrop for a quiet barefoot walk along the shoreline, filled with laughter, anticipation, and the kind of peaceful moments that often become the most cherished memories.
One of my favorite things about maternity photography is that it captures a chapter that exists only briefly. Before the sleepless nights, before first cries, before tiny hands wrap around your finger, there is this season of waiting. A season that deserves to be remembered just as much as the day your baby arrives, AND bringing along ultrasound photos is a beautiful way to personalize a pregnancy announcement session and tell a little more of your family's story.
