This Non-intervention Hospital Birth was a 30 + hours journey and worth every minute.

It all started with a typical phone call in the middle of the night by future dad, as often partners are the ones who need a Doula the most.

Mama had shared from our very first prenatal that she wished to have a non-intervention hospital birth, at all costs. While I always want to support my clients in the vision they craft for their birth, I also encourage them to stay flexible and open. For birth, rarely is predictable.

After making sure mom was resting as much as possible during the night, as soon as the sun rose, we started working hard.

Curb side walking, squatting, nipple stimulation, using the birth ball in bed and on the floor, while eating and drinking, kept us going for the few hours until these beautiful couple decided it was time to go to the hospital.

This decision was driven more by the fact that mom felt it was time and close to giving birth, while still holding the firm idea that they wanted a non-intervention hospital birth.

Once arrived at Cedars Sinai my clients had to wait in the triage to be checked in, while I had to wait in the visitor room. I didn’t like this part of the process but I was confident my clients were more than capable to advocate for themselves and their wish for a non-intervention hospital birth.

After being admitted, my clients were given a proper room to labor. From that moment on, every nurse who interacted with us was kind, professional and supportive of my clients’ wish to have a non-intervention hospital birth.

Their amazing OBGYN Dr. Finke was nothing short of amazing and a pleasure to work with. He arrived at the hospital once mama started to push. While we tried different positions, the most comfortable and efficient one seemed to be of mom lying on her back.

It took a few hours to see baby’s head starting to emerge and with a few final strong pushes mama hugged him into the world surrounded by the cheer of a room full of nurses and supportive care givers.

I was really grateful and pleasantly impressed of the care this family received for their non-intervention hospital birth. Especially during Covid, with the constant change of rules and restrictions, I have been so guarded and protective of my clients rights; but this time I really felt there was genuine support and will to respect my clients wishes.

I really felt all the staff went above and beyond to let mom labor undisturbed as long as possible and no one ever even tried to make her feel rushed or that there was any concerns with her or her baby well being.
